Abstract, figurative

Anneke Peereboom
Anneke Peereboom (Hoorn, 1950) trained as a graphic designer at the Rietveld Academy. She also graduated as a Master in Art & Culture. Lives and works in the Loire region in France and in Haarlem. Two completely different environments. The beautiful champagne landscape as well as the urban and industrial forms can be recognized in the paintings according to their origin.

The dynamics of her work can be found in all facets, even the rhythm with which the paint is applied partly determines the composition. Two characteristics are causal for the popularity of Anneke Peereboom. Firstly, her always recognizable 'handwriting' throughout all the work. And also the continuous development of new compositions or as they are usually called: stories.

Colour, shape and a great attention to detail: these are the eye-catching features of her work. For several years now, the artist has been occupied with a special interest in semiotics, the meaning of signs. This is particularly expressed in the canvases in which she has incorporated fragments of texts. The connection between form and meaning of signs and symbols fascinates her. A story that refers to another world, another dimension. While painting, one color is placed next to or over the other. Glazing or opaque.

“There is lightness in the paintings. That is quite remarkable, because the uninhibited undertone is not linked to a fast, smooth key. The paintings that Peereboom exhibits in six leading Dutch galleries, among others, are the result of a lengthy process. The skin of the canvases betrays a style of painting that cannot be separated from frequent considerations. Painting, overpainting, adding, removing and re-shaping eventually lead to layered compositions in which the struggle with underlying layers has remained visible. The paintings approach the viewer like a waterfall. Any upheaval quickly turns into curiosity, a quest for understanding and recognizing. Fortunately, the wondrous beauty is an alternative and savior for the beholder.”
