In contemporary visual art, composition is understood to mean: the coherence of visual means in
their mutual relationships and the position they occupy in the image in relation to each other, as experienced in their entirety by the modern viewer.

Visual image means: shape, colour, structure, texture and size.

Proportions: large – small, hue – brightness – saturation, regularity – irregularity, contrasts.

Position: space – residual space, distance of parts from each other.

These rational or emotional experiences of the viewer are time- and culture-bound and are expressed in terms such as good/bad, beautiful/ugly, fascinating/boring and above all as balanced/unbalanced.
